This miniature winter painting on a lacquered box is an example of traditional Russian Palekh art, depicting Ded Moroz (Father Frost) in a sleigh pulled by three horses.
Palekh (Палех) is a settlement in Russia with a very long history in the folk handicraft, an art style of painting Russian Orthodox icons.
In the 15th century, the village of Palekh was part of the Vladimir-Suzdal lands, where one of the oldest icon painting crafts developed. It reached its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1924, village artisans founded the Artel of Ancient Painting, which gave birth to a new form of folk art, a Palekh artistic lacquer.
The art style is characterized by its black background, vibrant colors, intricate details, and use of gold on diverse bead boxes, powder compacts, and other miniatures incorporating themes from epics, fairy tales, and even significant current events.
