Allegory of the Eucharist by Alexander Coosemans Fragment - A fragment from the 'Allegory of the Eucharist', an artwork on Biblical theme by Alexander Coosemans (oil on canvas, Museum of Tesse, Le Mans, France). Alexander Coosemans (1627-1689, Antwerp) was a Flemish Baroque painter, specialized in still lifes, a pupil of Jan Davidsz de Heem, the leading still life painter in the Netherlands.
In this particular work, the artist incorporates a sacred subject into a still-life, where the each item has a symbolic meaning. The abundance of food symbolizes the bounty of Creation and the Providence of God. The cornucopia on the top left contains corn which symbolized the Eucharist and a rose for a religious love. The cornucopia on the right, contains quinces and peaches, which in addition to the wheat and grapes, are symbols of plenty, of fertility and marriage, as well as of the immortality.
Placed at a place of honor at the center of the fruits of the earth, the Eucharist is shown with a translucent depiction of the crucified Christ. The artist here recalls Jesus’ sacrifice on Calvary Christ and the translucence of the image testifies to the real presence of Christ in the Eucharistic, which is the source of abundant and a food for the soul life for those who are able realize that Jesus truly exists. - , allegory, allegories, Eucharist, Alexander, Coosemans, fragment, art, arts, artwork, artworks, Biblical, theme, oil, canvas, museum, Tesse, Le, Mans, France, 1627, 1689, Antwerp, Flemish, Baroque, painter, painters, still-lifes, pupil, Jan, Davidsz, Heem, Netherlands, work, artist, artists, sacred, subject, item, symbolic, meaning, abundance, food, bounty, Creation, Providence, God, cornucopia, top, left, corn, rose, religious, love, right, quinces, peaches, wheat, grapes, symbols, plenty, fertility, marriage, immortality, place, honor, center, fruits, earth, translucent, depiction, crucified, Christ, sacrifice, Calvary, translucence, image, presence, source, abundant, food, soul, life - A fragment from the 'Allegory of the Eucharist', an artwork on Biblical theme by Alexander Coosemans (oil on canvas, Museum of Tesse, Le Mans, France).
